LA CROSS, Wis.—Jim Lund, an owner of Crescent Printing Company in Onalaska, has been named a recipient of the 2022 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tom Butler Award. Lund will be presented with the award during half time of UW-La Crosse’s home football game against UW-Platteville on Saturday 12th November. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Roger Harring Stadium in the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
Lund, who is from Onalaska, will also serve as honorary captain for Saturday’s game.
The Tom Butler Award has been presented annually since 1998 to a representative of the print or electronic media for outstanding coverage of WIAC athletics (former WIAC sports information directors may also be considered). The league’s sports information directors select the winner. The award is dedicated to Tom Butler, who faithfully served as the conference’s sports information director from 1967 to 1996.
Fans who have ever attended a UW La Crosse sporting event have seen Lund on the sidelines with his camera. He has photographed and provided graphic assistance for all 21 UW-La Crosse intercollegiate sports teams on the Eagles’ game schedules and the covers of all home football programs. Lund not only takes pictures for UW-La Crosse, but also provides photos for the opposing team.
Lund’s interest in photography came after he hired UW-La Crosse graduate Dave Christianson at Crescent Printing. Christianson designed the current Eagle L logo and was an audiovisual minor with an interest in photography. According to Lund, Christianson was instrumental in teaching and advising him on photography.
Lund began photographing at the UW-La Crosse football game in the mid-1970s, all in black and white. He expanded his photography to other UW-La Crosse sports and later switched to digital production. Lund says his favorite sport is NCAA Division III. “The hard work and passion of the athletes and the coaching staff is inspiring,” adds Lund. “It was a pleasure working for UWL and it continues to this day,” says Lund.
Lund, who graduated from Onalaska High School in 1963, played on the Hilltoppers tennis team in his senior year. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Lund served as a field medic with the 1st Infantry Division in the Delta and was in Vietnam in 1968-69. In the spring of 1969 he returned home and joined the family business Crescent Printing, then based in La Crosse. In the fall of 1969, Lund designed and printed the first football match schedule for UW-La Crosse sporting director Bill Vickroy.
Lund and Roger Bjorge, owners and presidents of Crescent Printing Company, received the 2005 UWL Donald Gordon Merit Award.
