I’ve been playing with my lights — two Alien Bees B400s that I got for Christmas — and trying to come up with the perfect portrait light. Of course I’m shooting my new favorite subject.

I like the effect I get from aiming the lights slightly behind the subject and letting them reflect off the background. I also get some wraparound light if I do it right.

I like Jill Greenberg’s light, even if some of her photos do make me a little queasy. And I’ve noticed on my tours of her website that it gets a little monotonous after a while. I would like to learn to do something else. I’ve managed a pale imitation of it. My hunch is that at this point I don’t have nearly enough lighting equipment.
