Baby Takes A Bath

Charlie and I have settled into a routine of having a bath every morning. At first it was just to deal with the awful diaper rash he had a couple of weeks ago. I was adding baking soda to the water to soothe his skin (baking soda seems to be one of the most versatile substances on the planet) but now it’s just become a way to transition from sleepy time to wake time. Bath time seems to be a happy time. I expected it to be a chore, but it’s one of my favorite times of the day. Here are some pictures.

I plan to take more pictures. He usually looks a lot cuter in the bathtub, but every time he got in a position that was, ahem, “modest,” he was looking away from me!

Of course, the lighting in the bathroom is awful, and I did these on the spur of the moment so I didn’t strobe it or anything. I decided to just do a high ISO and slow shutter speed, and convert to b&w so I didn’t have to worry about the color balance. The light over the bathtub is one of these awful new-fangled household flourescents that screws in like a regular light bulb, and it has a pinkish cast which is a color temperature recognizable by any camera I know of.

Here’s what I have learned:

Of all diaper rash ointments in the world, Triple Paste is the one. Trust me, we tried everything. Everything with everything on top, and a little everything on the side. The baking soda in the bathtub gave temporary relief, but I can’t keep the baby in the bathtub all day!

Nursing tops are very expensive. Very. I’m going to start making my own patterns; I’ve already gone out and bought some fabric. If anything turns out really well, I’ll post a picture and instructions online. I’m going to start with a nifty little design posted here.

My other project is to make my own nursing pads out of flannel. First of all, the diposable ones are uncomfortable. Well, just like disposable diapers, they are ultimately made out of wood! Plus, I’ve noticed my garbage can is filling up with them. When anything is filling up my garbage can, I tend to look at that and say, “there’s got to be a better way.”
